Lancaster Ag’s Microbial Seed Guard is a blend of beneficial microbes, a broad-base species of rhizobium, mycorrhizal fungi, and photosynthetics, designed for use in root dipping, seed coating and injection.

The broad-base species of rhizobium covers most commercial legume crops, eliminating the need for a different seed inoculant for each crop you plant. Rhizobia are critical for nodule formation on legumes and allow the plants, through the beneficial bacteria, to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere. This increases plant growth and decreases the need for nitrogen fertilizers. If fact, use of this broad-based inoculant capitalizes on the bacterial lifecycle (eat-reproduce-die), allowing them to thrive and positively impact the soil structure.

Mycorrhizal fungi (literally means “fungus root”) receive sugars from the plant, and in return, aid the plant in the takeup of water and nutrients in the soil. They form branch-like structures called hyphae, which extend the surface area of root hairs to provide more access to soil resources. Because hyphae are smaller than root hairs, they are able to penetrate further into the soil to seek out nutrients and water. When the resources in the immediate area are depleted, the hyphae simply extend further into the soil to find new supplies. The mycorrhizal fungi are good at phosphorus scavenging and producing glomalin -- a carbonaceous structure with great structuring, moisture holding and “long-term” carbon sequestration properties.

With the increased usable surface area from the mycorrhizal fungi, plants have greater access to the soil’s resources. Then, by adding the plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and photosynthetic bacteria,
these resources are broken down and able to be taken-up easier by the plant and mycorrhizal fungi. A symbiotic relationship is formed wherein plant, mycorrhizae and bacteria all benefit and flourish. The digestive enzymes
that are secreted by the mycorrhizae help solubilize nutrients, digest organic matter and process soil and substrate, which helps feed plant, fungi, bacteria and other soil organisms; creating a healthy, balanced soil ecosystem.
